The’OP del Pesce, in collaboration with API e IZSLT, launches an innovative Protocol for the health and well-being of fish farms in Tuscany and Lazio. A concrete action aimed at making aquaculture in both regions a model of quality, safety and sustainability.
A protocol for fish health and food safety
Aquaculture in Tuscany and Lazio represents a strategic sector for the local economy and for Italian fish production. For this reason, the OP Pesce has decided to adopt a specific Operational Protocol in collaboration with the Italian Piscicoltori Association (API) and the Institute of Experimental Zoology of Lazio and Tuscany (IZSLT).
This document defines the guidelines for:
● Strengthen the prevention of fish diseases
● Improving animal welfare
● Make diagnostic and monitoring activities more efficient
● Promote good biosecurity practices in marine and lagoon aquaculture facilities
The pillars of the Protocol
1. Prevention and biosecurity
The Protocol introduces a structured system of self-control based on risk checklists and a 21-day quarantine obligation for each new batch of chicks. Measures developed in line with FAO and OIE regulations to prevent the introduction of pathogens into the facilities.
2. Advanced diagnostics and monitoring
3. Certified animal welfare
Constant monitoring of the water quality, the stocking density and the physical conditions of the fish: fundamental elements to ensure a healthy environment, reduce stress and promote balanced growth.
4. Professional training and continuous support
OP del Pesce promotes refresher courses for technicians and operators, with the aim of responsible management of the breeding process, in compliance with European regulations and the ethological needs of the species.

A common commitment for a sustainable future
“This protocol sets a new standard for the quality of aquaculture in Tuscany. It is a concrete help for operators and a guarantee for consumers” –
Declares OP DEL PESCE President Claudio Pedroni
With this initiative, Tuscan aquaculture confirms its role as an example of excellence in the Italian and European landscape, aiming for a balance between productivity, public health and environmental protection.
