Innovative networks for sustainable aquaculture in the open sea
Open-water aquaculture requires advanced technical solutions to ensure efficiency, durability, and sustainability. In this perspective, the Op del Pesce, through the work of Domenico Lococo, responsible for a project in experimental phase, has initiated targeted research for the introduction of innovative nets to be used in the breeding facilities.
During a recent trip to India, Domenico conducted an in-depth analysis at a major international network manufacturer. The company visited has a high industrial capacity, with production processes characterized by precision and standardization: each network is made by teams of 20-40 operators, with constant supervision of the seams and the ties. The presence of specialized engineers and technicians also allows for complete customization of the products, from design to the choice of materials.
A central point of the analysis concerned the search for materials capable of combating biofouling, one of the main problems in marine farming. Among the solutions examined is the possibility of using copper-based nets with natural antifouling properties.
For the new projects of Op del Pesce, a network has been proposed that is capable of withstanding the mechanical stresses and damage caused by the fish, without compromising tensile strength.
In addition to the material analysis, an integrated system for feeding and collecting dead fish was developed with the technicians, with the aim of optimizing the operational management of the plants. Furthermore, network samples were acquired and will be subjected to comparative tests of resistance and durability under real conditions.
The selected networks will be used both for the project currently undergoing testing and for the enhancement of the already operational structures at Ittica Golfo di Follonica, confirming the Op del Pesce’s commitment to introducing innovations not only in future projects but also in current management.
This research activity represents a significant step towards the adoption of technological solutions that can improve productivity, reduce maintenance costs and ensure high standards of environmental sustainability within aquaculture facilities.
